More and more people want to know where and how their food is produced, increasing consumer awareness. Many folks are demanding transparency in food production so they can make a responsible environmental and health conscious decision. However, today’s consumers are more disconnected from the family farm and/or ranch than ever before.
As producers, we have the responsibility and privilege to provide food to people everyday. We can and should take this as an opportunity to educate the consumer. We need to educate with facts and first hand experiences to silence the misconceptions and biased opinions perpetuated by activists, food bloggers and the media.
There are so many outlets to educate. Social media is a great way to reach a vast amount of people quickly. Being involved with local schools and providing ag programs in urban schools is beneficial. Hosting events at your ranch or farm to educate different populations and demographics is extremely useful. Whatever your pathway is, do not let an opportunity to educate the people slip away.
